Amalfi Coast Outdoor Experience was born from Sergio's passion for the Amalfi Coast: he knows these trails and these waters like few others, and in his first year in business he has turned what he loves doing in his free time into his work. His goal is to share with visitors the most hidden and authentic corners of the coast: not the postcard routes, but the places and stories tourists usually never get to see.
A light trek suitable for everyone, experienced hikers and beginners alike (no preparation needed), that starts in the heart of Amalfi and climbs into the Valle delle Ferriere. The name tells the story of the place: in the 12th and 13th centuries, the water rushing down from the mountains powered both the ancient paper mills (Amalfi was one of the first places in Europe to make paper, exported as far as the Papal States) and the ironworks (ferriere) that forged iron for the ships of the Maritime Republic. You walk past the remains of these medieval workshops, now reclaimed by nature, before reaching the Valle delle Ferriere State Nature Reserve: 455 hectares protected since 1972, with waterfalls, a uniquely humid microclimate and the giant fern Woodwardia radicans, a relict species that has survived here since the age when southern Europe had a tropical climate. The trail is easy, with no climbing: you walk through the woods, off-road, but well within everyone's reach.
• Guide in Italian and English
• A small Vietri ceramic souvenir at the end of the experience
Meet at the Fountain of Sant'Andrea, with a short introduction to Amalfi's maritime history.
We pass the ancient 13th-century paper mill. Museum entry is optional and paid separately (~€5-6).
Walking among the remains of the medieval ironworks, with views over Amalfi from high on the trail.
Waterfalls and the prehistoric Woodwardia radicans fern. Entry fee required (~€5-6, paid on site): the most striking point of the route, with the chance to take a dip.
Recommended stop (optional, not included) at a small restaurant serving locally sourced food.
What to bring: hiking shoes or trail-suitable footwear, a hat, sunscreen, water (there is a drinking fountain along the route) and a small snack, as the walk lasts about four hours. Entry to the nature reserve (~€5-6) and the optional visit to the Paper Museum are paid on site and not included. We recommend a final stop, optional and not included, at a small restaurant serving locally sourced food. The waterfalls are at their fullest in May-June; in September-October, after the dry summer, they carry less water, but the route is just as beautiful. Recommended for ages 12 and up. Free cancellation up to 2 days before departure.
